Tunable Multiwavelength SOA-Based Fiber Laser

Tunable multiwavelength fiber lasers based on semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) have received attracting interest due to their wide prospective applications in dense division multiplexing (DWDM) systems and sensing. Using an SOA a nonlinear loop mirror (NOLM), we demonstrate up 13 lasing peaks by controlling the pump current polarization controller. At maximum (450 mA), emitted is between 1550 nm 1572 with wavelength spacing of 1.87 3 dB output linewidth 0.8 power −7 dBm 27 signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR). The peak stability are investigated, it was found that fluctuation each line less than 0.2 dB. We have demonstrated the application of a multiwavelength fiber ring laser as a cost-effective light source for wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical networks for the first time. The performances of the system for downstream signal are experimentally investigated. We have achieved error-free transmission over 17 km of dispersion-shifted fiber at a bit rate of 1.25 Gb/s per channel.
